The Clark Pioneers were winners in a conference match played against the the Gavit Gladiators on Wednesday evening at Fort Pioneer. The game was full of goals, as the final score was 7-3. The win puts the Pioneers at 3-0 overall in the Great Lakes Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Calvin Perez scored an absolute stunner from a corner kick in the first half of the game. The Pioneers formed for a set piece play off a corner kick. The intended cross from Perez curled just enough to curve into the opponent’s goal resulting in a goal scored from the corner “I am proud of how the goal turned out; I did not expect to score from the corner” admitted Perez, with just enough luck on his side.
Perez has had a solid start to the season through five games played. This is only the second time his name appears in the stats sheet; however, he is one of many unsung heroes on the team. Described as the “technical powerhouse” of the team by Senior Captain Rafael Maciel, Perez works relentlessly on all areas of the field. “I see my main role on this team as a distributor. I like to play deep in the midfield, possess the ball with my teammates, and distribute passes to open players” described Perez on his style of play.
“Calvin has always been a quiet player, but his game overcomes his silence. He is involved in almost every play, defensively and offensively. The ball is always being filtered through his feet, coming from the back of the field, which then compliments me as an attacking midfielder, as it allows me to create space in the attacking third of the field. Calvin’s defensive style of play mixes perfectly with my offensive style. It creates a perfect balance in the midfield, and that is why he is a very important player on the field.”

Senior Captain Marco Medina scored his 11th, 12th, and 13th goals of the season, earning his second hat-trick through five games played, while also assisting on 2 goals. Sophomore Alexis Frasco scored 1 goal, extending his scoring streak to 5 games and 7 goals overall, and assisted on 1 goal. Senior Captain Rafael Maciel tallied 3 more assists in the game, bringing his overall count to 12 in 5 games played.
Senior Defender Fernando Villanueva scored his first goal since his Freshman year, where he featured on the team as a Forward. His goal too was truly remarkable, having volleyed a right foot shot to the keeper’s right upper corner, twisting his body in a 45 degree angle from the right corner of the 18-yard box.
